Benefits of a Dehumidifier

If you have a damp basement or crawlspace, then you’ve probably been told that you should purchase a dehumidifier to help get rid of the problem. Dehumidifiers offer many benefits beyond just ridding a room of dampness and making it more comfortable though, so if you’re still on the fence about buying one then maybe this list of benefits will help.

Allergies & Dust Mites
High humidity can increase the amount of dust mites in a home, which in turn will lead to an increase in allergy and asthma issues. If dust mites are a problem throughout your home, then a whole house dehumidifier is the best solution for getting rid of them and helping your family breathe more easily.

Millipedes & Other Pests
Many small insects thrive in damp conditions. Basements, crawls spaces, bathrooms and laundry rooms can become a haven for millipedes and other pests that you don’t want to find in your home. Basement dehumidifiers work extremely well in crawl spaces and basements (of course), while a mini dehumidifier is usually powerful enough for a small bathroom or a damp closet. Finding a dehumidifier for your laundry room can be a bit trickier, depending on how often you do laundry and how humid the room can get, but our dehumidifier pint chart can help you find the perfect unit.

Warping & Rusting
It’s common knowledge that moisture can cause metals to rust and wood to warp, but we don’t always think about these issues happening inside our home. However, if it is wet enough in a home, the excess moisture can lead to door frames warping, which will keep doors from closing properly, and hinges can also start to rust. Tools and even vehicles in your garage will also rust if it is damp enough in the room. A home dehumidifier should protect your house from these problems and a small dehumidifier in your garage should protect your tools from rust.

Condensation can cause paint to blister and wallpaper to peel if it forms on your windows and walls. Bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens are the most susceptible to this problem, but it can happen in any room of the house. Running a portable dehumidifier after a shower, when doing laundry or while cooking can help prevent condensation. Portable units come with caster wheels, so they can be easily moved between rooms whenever needed.

Another place condensation can form is inside electronics like computers and stereos, which can cause irreparable damage. Try to store electronics in rooms with a low humidity if possible.

Mold & Mildew
Mold and mildew are two of the more common side effects of high humidity in a home and also the two most dangerous. A musty smell in a room is the first sign that there might be a problem. Sometimes, the easiest solution is to just air out the room, especially if it’s a guest room that isn’t used often, by opening air vents and the door and washing the bedding, which could be collecting some of the excess moisture.

If the musty smell is strong, it could be a sign that the room contains mold or mildew. Both are damaging to a person’s health if they breathe in the spores, and some forms of mold can even kill you. Place a crawl space dehumidifier in the room to see if it gets rid of the musty smell. The dehumidifier should keep mold from growing, but it will not kill it if it is already present. If you find mold, you should use a bleach solution to remove it entirely and run a dehumidifier in the room to keep it from returning.

Vicks Humidifiers

Vicks humidifiers are some of the best humidifiers on the market. You can get a cool mist, warm mist or an ultrasonic one for an affordable price. You can even get a filterless humidifier.

The one that I use is the Vicks Germ Free Humidifier. After much searching, I felt that this particular product was the best one for me. If you live in an apartment or you only have a couple of rooms to humidify, then this might be the right one for you too.

This Vicks humidifier is a warm mist unit. It kills up to 99.999% bacteria, mold and spores. The UV light on the unit kills the germs. There are two water tanks on the unit and they are easy to fill. You can also fill one of them while the humidifier is operating.

While operating, the unit is pretty quiet. There is a sound like boiling water but it’s not loud and can even be soothing while you’re sleeping. Most people are not bothered by the sound.

It’s best to place the humidifier on a table in order to keep it sturdy and level. If you don’t tighten the caps on the bottom of the tanks, it might cause the water to leak out. You don’t want the water to leak onto your floors or carpet. The unit can get pretty hot, so you might not want this in a child’s room or nursery.

The advertisement for this unit states that it can run for up to 24 hours before filling the water tanks. It might work for 24 hours if you have it set for very low humidity. But if you turn the humidity knob up on the humidifier, then you’ll get less than 24 hours of operation.

Some people have complained that the blue “ON” light is too bright and they can’t sleep because of it. I don’t have a problem with the light. It doesn’t bother me at all. And it doesn’t make the room a blue color like some owners have complained about. If the blue light bothers you, you can always put a piece of electrical tape or cardboard over it to cover it up.

There are no filters to deal with which is a big plus. But when it comes to cleaning, you have to clean the whole unit. There are detailed instructions on how to clean the humidifier and how often.

If you’re lazy like I am, cleaning this unit every couple of weeks can be a real pain in the butt. It needs to be done in order to keep it working properly and to get rid of the white dust that it accumulates. You don’t want mold and bacteria build up inside your humidifier.

If you have a cold or sinus problems, there is a reservoir on top of the unit where you can put some Vicks Vapor Steam in. Not only will it help with your respiratory problems but it will leave your room smelling really good.

This is just one of the Vicks humidifiers that you can buy locally or on the internet. There are several others that I will review in this section.

Cool and Warm Mist Humidifiers

What is the difference between the humidifiers.  Cool Mist vs. Warm mist humidifiers?  No matter which humidifier you get, they will perform the duties they are supposed to do. In the end the actually difference is based on the persons preferences and the situation.  Lately, the Doctors have been recommending the cool mist humidifiers for small children because of the less danger to having a child get hurt.  The warm mist humidifiers use the heater and the steam can harm children and adults as well if a person gets too close to the humidifier.

One main difference between the cool mist vs. the warm mist is that warm mist uses a lot more electricity to warm the water to product steam. Which means that your electrical bill may be a little larger than normal. But on the other hand, the cool mist humidifiers need to have distilled water (there is a little extra cost there) and the filter needs to be changed at least once a year.  Also, important to keep in mind is that for either to do the job required they need to be kept clean to prevent the bacteria.

I personally have major issues with sinuses.  For most sinus sufferers the cool mist is not that good because the cold air hurts sinuses a lot more.  So I use the warm mist humidifier. Again, this is based on my own needs, but I know a lot of people say that cool mist humidifiers do not help with sinuses as much as the warm mist.

Like I said before, they both have the same effect, no matter which humidifier you chose, it will add the moisture to the room.  To add to this, you should also get the one that has the built in humidistat.  This is important because as much as the lack of humidity causes problems, it is the same with the too much of the humidity.  With the built in humidistat, you will kept the humidity level at the right percentage and most experts say anywhere between the 30-50%.  Too much humidity may cause mold.  And one more thing to keep in mind when selecting the humidifier is to get the one that has the automatic shut off when the water level is empty.

Some of the popular humidifiers for the cool mist are: Bionaire and Holmes.

The popular humidifiers for the warm mist are: Vicks and Holmes

As mentioned before, I strongly believe that it comes down to the personal preference when choosing between the cool mist vs. warm mist humidifiers.

Some of the typical signs of excess moisture in the room are water beading on a window, condensation on the interior glass and presence of vapor or fog on the glass. The reason behind this is that you might be using a big humidifier. Due to this moisture in the room increases and rises too much humidity. Build up of moisture permits the mold to grow. You will find mold on the bottom window trim in dark grunge or black color. Make sure you turn off the use of a humidifier in your room to reduce the moisture. Open the windows to allow the air circulate in your room.

Even the humidity present in the construction materials can build up the moisture on windows. Sometimes the outdoor climate is also responsible for the condition of the indoors. To be on the safe side, make sure you rotate the dehumidifier on all the affected areas.

Mold Spots in Corners of Walls and on Ceiling

Moisture problems in the bathroom often occur in the corners of the walls and the ceilings. It happens because the steam rises in it. It is essential to keep enough fans in your bathrooms to divert the steam and also the humidity to the outdoors. Otherwise, the problems of mold develop in the bathroom. You will find mold on ceiling, wall, behind the bath or around the toilet. If your toilet is leaky, it can also cause moisture problems. Black mold can grow in the excess moisture, and they can give severe health issues to you and your family. You can also see some of the mold spots or dripping below windows. If this is the case, make sure you replace the windows along with the frames to stay away from the future problems.

Musty Odor or Smell:

The Musty smell indicates that there is a presence of mold, and that is not good for the health. For immediate moisture removal, a dehumidifier is the best option. As I have mentioned above, it is very crucial to know the main cause of the presence of mold otherwise they will come again after some time.

These were some of the signs by which you will get to know that it is high time to use a dehumidifier.

Also, the washable mesh filter will help prevent mildew and mold from growing inside the unit. The water container can collect up to 30 pints before it needs to be emptied. How to Choose Air Humidifier

In addition to the method of air humidification, the important criteria is the area of the room for which the device is designed, the volume of the tank and the water consumption (small unit can work with 1.5-liter water tank for 16 hours, residential units use from 2 to 12 gallons per day).

The tank size and water consumption of the room unit defines time without refilling. The humidifier should work for at least 10-12 hours. As a rule, a tank of water of 6-7 liters is enough for 24 hours, 3.5-4 liters – for 12 hours.

Useful Functions

  • The low-level water indicator. It is much easier to note the LED light than to check the water level by eye, especially when the tank is not transparent.
  • Automatically turn off function when the unit runs out of water. You can forget to pour water, the device can be accidentally touched and knocked over by a child or pet – all this should be safe for the home, child, cat or dog.
  • Indicator for cleaning the device.
  • Not a function, but it is important. The tank or whole unit should be easy to carry, there must be a handle.
  • It is great, if humidifier is able to rotate around its axis and spread steam in different directions.
  • Night mode. It is especially important for devices with natural humidification, with noisy fan, and for devices with bright light indicators and displays.

Optional functions

Air cleaning. If filters are installed in the humidifier, the manufacturer usually declares this function. If the unit comes with antibacterial filters – declares loudly. But the humidifier is not an air cleaner, and cleaning action can only be a secondary feature. If you have serious problems with health – allergies, asthma, you need to control the humidity of the air. Air filters will clean air much more effective. Besides, filters need to be changed, and it is additional expense item.

Traditional evaporative humidifiers are an exception. Filters there are an obligatory part of the design, and if they are antibacterial, it is even better.

Aromatization of air. Usually, the flavor is poured into a special capsule through which air is taken. Using flavors (as a rule, they are oil based) is not necessary and most of devices have not such feature.

Ionization. The enrichment of air by negatively charged particles have the property of attracting and retaining moisture, contributes to better air humidification.

Water lighting. Such humidifier can also work as a night lamp.
